THE RAID

The Battle for the Amami Islands

The Shimazu army departed from Satsuma province for Okinawa on 3m 4d (8 April 1609). Of the three eyewitness accounts, Ichiki Magobe’e Iemoto provides the first description of the operation, beginning with the time he left his home in Takayama on the last day of the second lunar month (4 April). He describes his arrival on 3m 1d (5 April) at the point of embarkation, which was Yamakawa, a small harbour at the end of the peninsula to the south of Kagoshima. Ichiki’s contingent must have been among the last to arrive, because the army had been assembling since 2m 6d (11 March). His narrative continues until his return to Yamakawa on 4m 28d of the same year (31 May), his part in the entire Ryky conquest from leaving home to returning having been completed in less than two months.
